CASTING ON BIG TIME

You need to cast on 1,200 stitches, so how long should the tail be? Try this:

Wrap the yarn around the needle 12 times. Take the yarn off and measure it. It should be about 8" (20.5 cm) long and that’s 1/100 the length you will need in total (1,200 stitches divided by 12). So, 8" (20.5 cm) × 100 = 800" (2,050 cm) or 66 feet (201 m). Using the Five Foot Rule, that would mean stretching the yarn from fingertip to fingertip about 13 to 14 times. Throw in a couple extra fingertip stretches. It would be far better to waste a few feet of yarn than to have to start casting on all over again.
